Oban is really about the little horsehoe Oban bay on which the town stands. The 8,000 residents are swollen four times by visitors in Summer. Oban is the Gateway to the Isles and the ferry services are extensive to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Attractions in Oban include the Waterfront Centre, the Oban Distillery, Dunollie Castle, Dunstaffnage Castle and McCaig's Tower. Oban is an excellent base from which to explore West Scotland. The Oban Tourist Information Centre is located in Argyll Square. Nearby is the Calmac Oban ferry terminal.

Fort William is called the Outdoor capital of the UK is the largest town in the area. Fort William has the highest mountain in the UK - Ben Nevis, and Loch Morar - the deepest loch. Fort William is the focus of road and rail routes. The town is at the end of the West Highland Way, Scotland's oldest and most popular long distance walk: and the start of the Great Glen Way, the newest. Good shops in the pedestrian area, and its own famous Inverlochy castle.

Surprises in Oban and Fort William weather

Oban and Fort William get more settled weather in April and May and in September and October.

Oban and Fort William enjoy very long days in the summer with sunrise at approximately 4.31am and sunset at approximately 10.15pm on the longest day. Conversely sunrise on the shortest day is at approximately 8.54am and sunset is at 3.46pm.

In May and June the weather tends to be at its best in terms of most sunshine and least rainfall (though not highest temperatures); the days are extremely long; the visitor attractions are open, yet visitors are still relatively thin on the ground.
